"It is loneliness that makes the loudest noise. This is true of men as of dogs." -Eric Hoffer this quote shows great relevance to this story. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men the most obvious theme is loneliness. In this story the characters don't get the love and attention they need, so they try to be "loud" and get it from other places. In this story Lennie is the only one who truly isn't lonely.
Crooks is a crippled stable buck and sadly because he's black he has to sleep in the barn. Because of this Crooks usually has no one to talk to, so he is extremely lo
nely. Crooks has grown up with this his whole life so he's used to it. Even though he's used to it he's still feed up with it(and with good reason). "A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody." (pg.72) One day Lennie walked into his room after seeing his light, at first Crooks didn't want to let him in, but he eventually did. Crooks won,t admit it but he likes having Lennie in there with him; he likes finally not being lonely. Sadly Lennie dies, so Crooks has no one to talk to.
Candy is an old one-handed ranch worker, who has no one but his old sickly dog. No one but Candy likes this dog, everyone else thinks he stinks and is just a burden. One day everyone had, had enough with so they convinced Candy(even though it was the last thing he wanted to do) to kill it. "No I couldn't do that. I had 'im too long." (pg.45) Candy was incredibly sad after this and did nothing but cry. Candy couldn't help over hearing Lennie and George talk about getting their own place. He wanted to join and they planned the whole thing out. But because of Lennie's death they no longer went through with it.
Curley's Wife had wanted to be an actress her whole life, but her mother was against it. Instead of doing what she really wanted, she settled down and married Curley. With Curley she was forced into a life that was nothing like the one she wanted. She was forced onto a farm full of men and she was stuck with a rude husband, who didn't pay attention to her. So because she wasn't getting attention from Curley she tried to flirt with the farm workers, but they knew not to mess with her. "Ain't I got a right to talk to nobody?" (pg.87) She made the mistake of talking to Lennie alone and sadly he killed her by accident.
As you can see from the examples I've shown that the quote "It is loneliness that makes the loudest noise. This is true of men as of dogs." -Eric Hoffer is very true to the story. This quote also applies to the real world; it is the lonely ones that cry out for attention.
