In William Golding's Lord of the Flies not everything is what it seems. In the beginning everyone thought the island was paradise; no adults, no rules, no one to tell you what to do. This all quickly changes and the island turns into a living hell. In this book William Golding explains that everyone has a dark side and that good does not always win.
Piggy was a major character in this book; he was the voice of reason. Sadly though no one listened, they didn't even bother to learn his name. Although no one respected Piggy he
still had some power. His glasses were the only way of getting fire on the island, and you need that to live. People still didn't listen to him though, one of the most important lines in the story was when Piggy said "Which is better- to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph?" (pg.180) According to the rest of the island it was not to be sensible.
Ralph the main character in this book, stood for good. Ralph was the one who took over and tried to get everyone rescued. He decided to build a fire so passing ships would see it and try to save them. Along with Piggy's help and the conch Ralph tried everything he could to keep everyone together and rescued. "We want to be rescued; and of course we shall be rescued." (pg.37) Unfortunately not everyone got along.
Jack was the person who stood for evil. All he ever wanted was to be chief and hunt. He wasn't always bad though, he was actually good in the beginning but the island got to him and turned him bad. "We'll hunt. I'm going to be chief." (pg.133) He ended up making his own tribe of hunters like he always wanted, and actually ended up killing. If it weren't for the navy finding them, him evil would have won.
So as you can see not every story ends with good winning, sometimes it's evil. You can also see through this book, that everyone no matter how far down it is, has a dark side.
